Expressing optimism that Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh would ignite fresh dedication to sustainable progress and equitable growth, he urged every section of society to share collective responsibility in realising these aspirations.

General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh also underscored the pressing need for environmentally responsible development, cautioning against the dangers of ecological neglect. He called upon all stakeholders to unite in pursuit of the national vision of a developed India -Viksit Bharat @2047 -and made a special appeal to the Mizo tribal community to progress resolutely while safeguarding their distinct identity and cherished cultural values.

He mentioned the Mizoram Government’s proactive alignment with Central schemes and acknowledged the unwavering support of officials, community leaders, NGOs, and citizens in driving development.

As part of the tribute to tribal icons, floral tributes were offered before portraits of Birsa Munda- the architect of the ‘Ulgulan Movement’ against British colonial rule - alongside Mizoram’s revered freedom fighters Nikuala, Lianphunga and Khuangchera, honoring their sacrifices for the nation. Pi Chingthanmawii, Adviser-cum-Joint Secretary, P&PI Department, delivered the welcome address and elaborated on the significance and objectives of Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh. The Mizo Cultural Organisation enthralled the audience with vibrant displays of traditional dances, attire, and customs, vividly showcasing the richness of Mizo tribal life.

The celebration also featured the inauguration of a Tribal Freedom Fighter Wall, alongside exhibitions of local crafts, handlooms, culinary delights, and innovative exhibitions. After the formal programme, the Governor personally visited the stalls, interacting with artisans and innovators to understand their work. The exhibitions will remain open to the public today and tomorrow and the Planning and Programme Implementation Department has encouraged the public to visit and participate in this event.

One of the greatest Mizo chiefs, Nikuala of Chawngtlai village, valiantly defended his people by keeping the eastern invaders at bay and maintaining peace among the Lushai tribes. Lianphunga, the courageous son of Sailo Chief Suakpuilala, fought tirelessly to protect his land from the British invasion of the Lushai Hills. He is remembered as one of Mizoram’s earliest freedom fighters who sacrificed his life for his homeland. Another legendary warrior, Khuangchera, is celebrated in Mizo history for his unmatched strength and courage. He led a brave attack on the Changsil Fort and was killed in battle in September 1890.

The event served as a powerful reminder of tribal contributions to India’s freedom and cultural tapestry, while reinforcing the collective resolve toward a prosperous and sustainable future.
