Hnahthial Post | January 21, 2026, Aizawl: This morning at 11:00 AM, the Fisheries Department rededication ceremony for the year 2026, titled 'Official Briefing for 2026', was held at the Fisheries Conference Hall, Directorate of Fisheries, MINECO, Aizawl. Fisheries Minister Pu Lalthansanga attended the event as the Chief Guest.
Pu Lalthansanga expressed his pleasure regarding the various advancements made by the Fisheries Department under the Government of Mizoram. He encouraged the department staff to equip themselves with modern technology and to continue learning to enhance their skills. He also urged the employees to exert greater effort so that Mizoram can become self-sufficient in fish production. The Minister charged the staff to begin their work in 2026 with integrity and diligence so that the people of Mizoram may receive greater blessings through the department. He further motivated the gathering by reminding them that their daily profession is their service and urged them to work hard and remain accessible to the farmers.
Er. Lalrothanga, Secretary of the Fisheries Department, gave a PowerPoint presentation on the topic 'Presentation of ongoing and proposed Projects'. Providing an analysis of the Fisheries Department's initiatives and future goals, he highlighted that there are currently 22,661 farmers earning a living through fish ponds, covering an area of approximately 6,000 hectares across 3,207 fish ponds. He also reported that between 2024 and 2025, 7,177 metric tons of fish were produced.
Pi Zonuntluangi, Director of the Fisheries Department, outlined the history of how the department was established in Mizoram. She noted that during the Union Territory period, it was a wing under the Agriculture Department. It was elevated to a full-fledged department in 1993, and currently, there is a District Fisheries Development Office (DFDO) in every district. She also submitted a report on the status and operations of the department at both the Directorate and District levels.
During the event, Upa C. Lalremliana, Chairman of the Mizoram KVI Board, led the devotion while Pi Zonunthari, Joint Secretary, chaired a discussion on plans for the department's future development. The ceremony was attended by District Fisheries Development Officers and staff from the Directorate of Fisheries.
