Hnahthial Post | June 23, 2026, Aizawl: As part of the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed annually on 26 June, a seminar on the theme “Emerging Trends and New Challenges Faced by Mizoram” was held today at Lianchhiari Conference Hall, I&PR Department. Excise & Narcotics Minister Shri. Lalnghinglova Hmar attended the programme as the chief guest.
The seminar was jointly organized by the Social Welfare Department, Women & Child Development Department, DC Aizawl Office, Health & Family Welfare Department, Mizoram Police, Excise & Narcotics Department, DIPR, Higher & Technical Education Department, IG Prison, School Education Department, 23 Sector Assam Rifles, BSF, MRH&CD, MSACS, CYMA, MKHC, MDUF, FINGODAP and SLCA NE-III.
In his address, Shri. Lalnghinglova Hmar stated that the Government of Mizoram and various organizations have been making sustained efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking. While stressing the need for stronger and more coordinated action, he noted that Mizoram’s relatively small size and population present an opportunity for more effective collective action. He expressed confidence that if all sections of society work together, the state can make significant progress in addressing the drug menace and safeguarding its future generations.
Delivering the welcome address, Shri. Sushil Singh, Director, Social Welfare Department, said that the seminar was organized as part of the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. He noted that Mizoram’s geographical location along international borders and its proximity to the Golden Triangle make it particularly vulnerable to drug trafficking and substance abuse. He emphasized that the issue must be addressed through a comprehensive approach encompassing prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, awareness generation and community participation, while calling for greater collaboration among government agencies, civil society organizations, churches and citizens.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri. C. Lalruaia, Secretary, Excise & Narcotics Department, highlighted the need for Mizoram to continuously develop new strategies and adapt to emerging trends in drug abuse by utilizing advanced knowledge, expertise and innovative approaches.
The seminar featured presentations by experts on various aspects of drug abuse and rehabilitation. Shri. Peter Zohmingthanga, Joint Commissioner, Excise & Narcotics Department, delivered a presentation on “Emerging Trends in Drug Abuse: Perspectives on Supply Reduction.” Dr. R.L. Sanghluna, Director, Synod Hospital, spoke on “Medical Aspects of Addiction and the Current Challenges in Care and Treatment.” Smt. Vanlalhruaii, MSD & RB, Directorate of Social Welfare, presented “Drug Demand Reduction: Strategies for Addressing Emerging Challenges,” while Shri. Lalremruata, President, Mizoram Drug Users Forum (MDUF), spoke on “Community Perspective on Emerging Trends and Challenges.”
The programme was chaired by Shri. Lalramdinsanga. Following the presentations, an interactive discussion and question-and-answer session was held, providing participants with an opportunity to exchange ideas, share experiences and explore collaborative approaches to addressing the challenges posed by drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
